One team town

2007 Grand Final
Ok I admit I am a bandwagon supporter and when I hitch my wagon to a band I am very enthusiastic! As I have mentioned before, I haven't lived in Geelong since I was at school and I never really appreciated the "one team town" mentality before. This is probably because in my youth the most recent Grand Final win for the Geelong Cats was in 1963, before I was born. After that they broke the draught in 2007. I had the privilege of seeing the 2007 Grand Final in person in corporate luxury (usually the only way I'll attend a sporting event and hence not very often!...this is because i am SOFT!) I did feel a tad guilty that year seeing all those die hard, dedicated fans queuing for tickets while I was granted mine so easily. (The company CEO at the time was a G town lad born and bred!)

Even though I am a band wagon supporter, I really do love an event and I love the hype that G town is generating. There are people driving around with flags on their cars, all the shops are decorated and people seem happy! This brings me to my disappointed husband, who is a Hawks fan and whose team very narrowly missed their Grand Final spot in a nail biting game last night. Even I watched it on TV and I was breaking out into a sweat. My husband's dad is a VERY loyal Cats fan and has 3 sons who all barrack for the Hawks. That just doesn’t seem fair does it? He had managed to convert our Miss 6 for the first 3 or 4 years of her young life to be a little cat but alas, she has now turned out to be following in the footsteps of her father.

At school on Friday the kids had "footy dress up day". I was wondering how she would approach this. Earlier in the year she had instructed me to take the Hawks stickers off her lunch box so that she wouldn't be taunted! I have tried to encourage her to stand proud! She is not used to the one team town either. Anyway, she decided to wear her Hawks jumper, with a blue skirt and white leggings, hedging her bets both ways. When we turned up at school it was a sea of blue and white and I took a glance at her face. She looked a bit tentative but strolled on in. I asked her after school how her day was. She said "we played footy and I was a pretty good kicker!” You go girl I thought to myself! I then asked "How did you feel about wearing your Hawks top?” “Fine,” she said. ”Only one person booed me." Not a bad result all up.

I am grateful this week for being back in G town so that I can soak up the footy fever and hitch my wagon to the Cats band a little more legitimately!!

Winners are grinners!
Corporate luxury!
